Up on the mountain is a big ski resort.

US-50 and Lake Tahoe

Mono Lake, on the drive from Tahoe to Yosemite.

Great Basin National Park is right on the Eastern edge of Nevada. Lake Tahoe is right on the Western border. Connecting them is the Nevada stretch of US highway 50 which is known as the Lonliest Highway due to the lack of traffic and towns along the way.

All up it was an entire day of driving. Nevada is the most mountainous state in the US and the drive involved crossing up and over mountain ranges and driving the wide valleys between them. The scale of the landscape is hard to judge due to it being so open. A valley would look to be a mile or two wide and then 10 minutes later we would still be less than half way across.

We arrived at Lake Tahoe as the sun was setting. The thick forest and lakeshore was a nice change of scenery. The next day was very wet which was also a nice change of pace as we'd only felt a few raindrops on the rest of this trip. We were in Tahoe at a bit of an odd time as the summer lake season was long done, but the winter skiing season was still a while off.
